Behind the Pour: How Each Candle Is Made

Behind the Pour: How Each Candle Is Made?

Step 1: The Mix

Our proprietary concrete blend starts with fine-grain aggregate, Portland cement, and a small amount of natural fibre for reinforcement. We mix in small batches using a forced-action mixer — never a drum mixer, which introduces too many air bubbles. The consistency should be like thick cream: pourable but with body.

Step 2: The Pour

Each mould is hand-greased with a plant-based release agent. The concrete is poured in two stages: a base layer, then a vibration cycle to release trapped air, then the top layer. The mould is then tapped by hand — thirty firm taps on each side — to ensure density.

Step 3: The Cure

Fresh pours rest for 24 hours before demoulding. The demoulded pieces then cure for a minimum of 48 hours in a humidity-controlled environment. This slow cure is critical — it develops the compressive strength that makes our vessels durable enough to last decades.

Step 4: Finishing

Each vessel is hand-inspected. We check for pinholes, cold joints, and surface consistency. Minor imperfections are sanded smooth. Pieces that don't meet standard are crushed and reintroduced into the next mix — zero waste.

Step 5: Wick & Wax

Cotton wicks are centred by hand. Soy wax is melted to 60°C, cooled to 55°C, then poured at a steady, slow rate to prevent turbulence. The candle rests for 12 hours before the first trim.

Step 6: Quality Check

Before shipping, each candle is weighed (to confirm proper fill), inspected for wick centring, and tested with a short burn to ensure clean ignition. Only then does it earn the Studio Moncada mark.
